phylum nematoda Flashcards
(10 cards)
what organisms are included in phylum nematoda?
roundworms, ascaris, hookworm, pork worm (trichinella), filarial worms
what body cavity and structure do all nematoda have?
pseudocoelom lined by mesoderm on one side making it triploblastic and bilateral
describe the body of a roundworm
cyndrical, tapers to a fine tip, covered by nonliving cuticle
what are the nematode evolutionary adaptations?
1) high reproductive potential
2) increased likelihood of transmission
3) enzyme resistant cuticle/eggs
4) encysted larvae
describe the ascaris life cycle
1) eggs released in feces
2) larvae is ingested and hatches in intestines
3) penetrates intestinal wall to enter circulatory system
4) goes to lungs where ecdysis occurs
5) crawls up trachea and into pharynx to be swallowed back to intestines
how and what do hookworms feed on?
feed on blood and tissue fluids by holding onto the intestinal wall with teeth
what are rhabditiform and filariform larvae in hookworms?
R: 1st and 2nd stages of development in soil
F: 3rd stage of larvae that penetrate skin
how is pork worm/trichinella spread?
larvae can lie dormant in skeletal muscles until another host ingests infected meat
where do filarial worms live?
lymphatic systems/blood vessels
what do filarial worms cause and how are they transmitted? (aka dog heartworms)
causes elephantiasis transmitted by mosquitos
