Physical: Redcar (PR) Flashcards

Title/ hypothesis?
PR- Hard engineering is controlling LSD at Redcar. (Groynes slow down LSD)
Why Redcar?
- It’s close - can get there and back in one school day!
- Safe location - few risks
- Has Groynes - links to hypothesis (duh!)
Risk assessment.
What are the risks?
How can the risks be reduced?
- Tide coming in whilst measuring - risk of drowning and cancellation of field work – 1. check tide times and do fieldwork while the tide is out
- Slip/ fall - weather condition may create slippy areas near groynes – 2. wear appropriate footwear. First aider with us, phones in case emergency services need to be called.
Methodology? Quantitative
Quantitative (quantity - NUMBERS) measurements
- every 10m was measured either side of 4 groynes
- differences in height measured
Methodology? Qualitative
Qualitative (anything that is not a number) sketches
Differences in height VISUALISED.
Links to hypothesis?
Without the groyne, there would be no buildup MEASURED or VISUALISED!
This will help to prove LSD by measuring teh drop either side of the groyne to see if the sand is being moved E to W or vice versa.
Method 2? Image
This will show if one side of the groyne has more sediment hence showing if LSD is a process occuring.
Data presentation?
Measurements (Quantitative) - Bar graph
- Simple and Visual
Measurements (Qualitative) - Sketches
- Simple and visual
Conclusion?
On the whole, the results did confirm that hard engineering is controlling LSD at Redcar.
Evaluation EBI?
- Random sampling was used which only looked at 4 groynes.
- We only measured beach height at 2 parts of each groyne.
- Only done on one day of the year
- Sketches not very accurate
Evaluation - Solution?
- Could have measured all 17 groynes
- Could measure more than 2 areas of the groyne spaced out at 5 metres
- I could return to do my recordings at different times of the year.
- Pictures taken instead of sketches - shown which groynes were damaged and which were of a different length, which would have affected the ability to control LSD.
Impact on results and conclusion?
- An average depth for all 17 groynes could have been looked at - would reduce anomalies and improved validity of the conclusion.
- Visiting at different times of the year would have resulted in a greater amount of data - more accurate results and a more valid conclusion
- If photos had been used instead of sketches, they may have backed up the primary data and given a more accurate pic of whether groynes were effective in controlling LSD.
Analysis: Describe your results?
5/8 sets of measurements showed there was a greater accumulation of sand on the W side of the groyne. Groyne 2 had the greatest difference of 54cm and groyne 3 had the smallest difference at 20m of only 7cm.
Analysis: Groyne Measurements (Quantitative)
- As 63% of the measurements showed the W side of the groyne had a greater amount of sediment - suggests groynes are controlling LSD to some extent
Analysis: Groyne sketches (Qualitative)
The sketches showed no diff on either side of groyne. they showed the state of repair in 1/4 on the groynes.
