Q

Eliminative materialism is self refuting

A

P1- Eliminative materialism claims that mental states, such as belief, do not exist
P2-However, if beliefs do not exist, then we cannot believe Eliminative materialism is true
C1-therefore, according to eliminative materialism, it is not possible to believe and coherently articulate eliminativism
C2- therefore the theory is self refuting

Q

Argument against Eliminative materialism is self refuting (vitalist vs anti-vitalist) fallacious argument

A

P1- anti vitalists claim that vital spirit doesn’t exist
P2- if this is true, then the vitalist would not be alive
P3- If the anti vitalist is not alive then the words used to articulate their view are not expressions of genuine belief.
C- so according to anti vitalists view , it is not possible to believe their claims, so anit vitalists are self refuting

Q

our certainty about the existence of mental states
argument based off introspection

A

P1- when we look into our own minds we are directly aware of the mental state we are in, such as beliefs and sensations.
P2-it is absurd/ incoherent to deny what we are directly aware of.
C-so eliminative materialism is wrong to deny the existence of mental states, picked out by the theory of folk psychology.

Q

inverted qualia

A

P1. if functionalism is true, then two functionally identical mental states are the same mental states
P2. My mental state when i look at the sky is functionally identical to yours, but phenomenally different
C1. therefore our mental states are not the same mental state
