Physics Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work, if an object does work it uses energy.
How do we measure energy?
Joules, Kilojoules and Megajoules
Types of Energy (10)
Kinetic, light, gravitational, chemical, potential, sound, elastic, heat, electrical, nuclear
What is kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy of movement.
What is the difference between heat and thermal energy?
Heat is the radiant heat energy given out as electro magnetic radiation by hot objects, where is thermal energy is heat flow form otter objects to colder objects.
What is stored energy and how does it relate to potential energy?
Stored energy gives objects the potential to make things work, e.g. chemical gravitational elastic nuclear
Define Potential chemical energy
Chemical energy is energy stored by food, fuels and batteries. In food when you digest it your body releases the energy to store so your body can work, or for fuel it released when its burnt (oil, wood, gasoline)
Define gravitational energy
This is energy stored in an object due to its lost on above ground.
FORMULAS CHECK BACK OF CARD
Work = force x distance
Power = work/distance
Work = force x distance
.
. .
Power = (force x distance)/ time
What is the formula for acceleration?
A= final velocity (vf) - initial velocity (vi)/ time (t)
What are scalar quantities?
Have a size only for example speed of the car was 60km/h
What are vector quantities?
Have both size and direction for example the boat sailed 30om north
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is a scale quantity and is how far something had moved in metres. Displacement however is a vector quantity and is how far an object has moved form its starting point and its direction.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is a scalar quantity and is how fast something has travelled in m/s. velocity is a vector quantity and is how fast, the direction something is in a straight line, m/s firectinn
Formula for speed?
Speed= distance/time
What is acceleration?
Is a vector quantity and is when an objects velocity increased we say its accelerating.
Formula for when we need to figure out displacement?
S=ut + 1/2 at^2
