Physics 1b - electricity and waves Flashcards
(23 cards)
Name four non-renewable energy resources?
Coal
Oil
Nuclear fuels
Natural gas
Name 8 renewable energy resources?
Wind Solar Geothermal Waves Tide Hydroelectric Food Biofuels
Wind power?
Lots of little wind turbines.
Solar cells?
Generate electric currents directly from sunlight.
Hydroelectric power?
Uses trapped rainwater.
Pumped storage?
Gives extra supply only when needed.
Waver power?
Lots of little wave powered turbines.
Tidal barrages?
Big dams with turbines in them - tide comes in, fills it up, turns the turbine.
Geothermal energy?
Heat from underground rises.
Biofuels?
Made from plants and waste - gets burned.
What is carbon capture and storage?
Used to reduce the amount of CO2, building up in atmosphere, and reduces strength of greenhouse effect.
How is electricity distributed?
Through the National Grid.
What do waves have?
Amplitude, Frequency and Wavelength.
What is the amplitude?
Distance from peak to line of equilibrium
What is frequency?
Number of waves passing a point per second.
What is wavelength?
Distance between 2 neighbouring peaks.
What vibrations do transverse waves have?
Sideways.
What vibrations do longitudinal waves have?
Along the same line.
What are the vibrations in transverse waves like?
Perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer of the wave.
What are the vibrations in longitudinal waves like?
Parallel to the direction of energy transfer of the wave.
What is the law of incidence?
Angle of incidence = angle of reflection.
Diffraction?
Waves spreading out.
Refraction?
Changing the speed of a wave can change its direction.
