Physics and Bio Term 2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Difference between infectious and non-infectious diseases.
Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens and non-infectious diseases are not. Infectious diseases spread from one host to another while non-infectious diseases cannot.
Define disease
Any condition that impairs or that has the potential to impair the functioning of an organism or any part of it.
Define Sign
Seen and measured, visible
Define symptom
Felt by patient
Define prevention
Serving to stop the incident before it takes hold
Define treatment
The management and cause of a disease. The management and care of a disease in the hope of curing it.
Define diagnostic procedures
Procedures used to help decide the cause
Define diagnosis
Indication of a disease by means of signs and symptoms
Define prognosis
The forecast of a probably outcome of a disease
Identify pathogens and an example of a common disease they cause
Bacteria - Bubonic plague, VIruses - Ebola, Fungi - Ringworm, Protozoa - Malaria, Macro Parasites - Tapeworm
Compare Bacteria and Viruses
Viruses - Smaller, can only replicate inside the cells of other organisms, and are unaffected by antibiotic medicines.
Bacteria - Larger, can replicate on its own, affected by antibiotic medicines.
Both are a type of microbe and can cause infections.
Identify 6 modes of disease transmission
Airborne, Direct Contact, Sexual Transmitted, Waterborne, Foodborne, Insect-borne
Why are developing countries more susceptible to epidemics and pandemics
poor infrastructure, overcrowding, inadequate public health systems
Strategies to control the spread of infectious disease
Masks, social distancing, clean water/sanitation
Two defence systems for body
Non specific - 1st and 2nd line of defence, will attack anything foreign
Specific - 3rd line of defence - adaptive
How do vaccines build immunity against pathogens?
It encourages production of antibodies that lock onto unique markers of the pathogen to identify them for destruction
Malaria - Genus name of the pathogen, organisms that act as hosts to this parasite, method of transmission, methods of prevention/control, major signs and symptoms
Plasmodium, mosquito, insect borne disease, antimalarial drugs, insect repellents, mosquito nets, shivering fits, high fever, headache, nausea, profuse sweating
