16
Q

What force acts on falling objects?

A

Air resistance.

17
Q

What factors affect air resistance?

A
  • The larger the surface area, the larger the air resistance.
  • The larger the velocity, the larger the air resistance.
18
Q

Explain why falling objects reach terminal velocity.

A
  1. When an object falls, its weight causes it to accelerate towards the ground.
  2. Restive forces act on it in the opposite direction to its motion.
  3. As the object’s speed increases, the restive force increases until these balance the downward force of the object’s weight.
  4. This means that there is no resultant force and it travels at a constant (terminal) velocity.
19
Q

Stopping distance =

A

Thinking distance + braking time.

20
Q

What factors affect vehicle stopping distance?

A

The mass of the vehicle. The speed of the vehicle. Road conditions e.g. wet roads. Reaction time which can be slowed by alcohol consumption.

21
Q

What does proportional mean in a directly proportional relationship?

A

As one variable increases, the other variable increases at the same rate.

22
Q

What is elastic behaviour?

A

Elastic behavior is the ability for a material to recover its original shape after the forces causing deformation have been removed.

23
Q

What is elastic deformation?

A

Elastic deformation occurs when an object has been stretched and it returns to its original length after the forces have been removed.

24
Q

What is inelastic deformation?

A

Inelastic deformation is when an object has been stretched and it doesn’t return back to its original length when the forces are removed. The object remains permanently stretched.

25
What is the conservation of energy?
A principle stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or converted from one form to another.
26
Work done (W) =
Force (F) x Distance (d).
27
Energy transferred =
Work done (joules).
28
Gravitational potential energy (GPE) =
mass (m) x gravitational field strength (g) x height (h).
29
Kinetic energy =
1/2 x mass (m) x velocity^2 (v).
30
Power =
Work done or energy transferred / time.
31
What is power?
The rate of energy transfer or the rate of doing work.
32
Velocity ^2 =
initial velocity ^2 + 2 x acceleration x displacement.
