Physics June Exam Flashcards
(11 cards)
define vector
a quantity that have magnitude and a direction
define scalar
a quantity that only has magnitude
examples of vectors
-displacement
-velocity
-Acceleration
-force
-weight
-momentum
examples of scalars
-distance
-speed
-time
-power
-energy
-temperature
define displacement
the shortest point between the two points
what is a centre of mass?
is where gravity affects you from
what is the golden rule of energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed only transferred
what is the equipment needed for the practical of investigating waves
-ripple tank
-stop watch
-camera
-ruler
what is the method of the practical of investigating waves
-set up a ripple tank and increase the frequency so therefore you decrease the wavelength
-place a ruler and a piece of paper underneath the ripple tank. place it along the long side of the paper. use the camera to film the waves in slow motion for 10 seconds and count
-use a camera to take a photo of the waves and then see the distance of the wave length using the ruler.
-measure start and end point of the ruler. then use a camera and stopwatch to calculate how long one wave will go from the start to the finish.
what is the law of reflection?
the angle of incidence is the same as the angle of reflection
what is the ear do once a sound has gone through it?
-when a sound is made it causes the air to vibrate
-the sound waves travel through the air
-the sound waves are caught by the pinna
-the vibrations travelling down the ear canal cause the ear drum to vibrate
-the vibrations of the ear drum cause the bones next to it to vibrate. these are the stirrup, hammer and anvil
-the vibrations of the bones of the inner ear are passed on the cochlea which is full of fluid
-the cochlea sends message to the brain down the auditory nerve
