Physics - Space And Beyond βοΈπ°οΈππΈπ Flashcards
What are the 2 main models of our solar system?
Geocentric and Heliocentric models
What the geocentric model?
The model in which the Earth is at the centre of the solar system and everything orbits it
What is the Heliocentric model?
The model in which the Sun is at the centre of our solar system and everything orbits it
Who made the first telescope?
Galileo Galilei
What is type of telescope Galileoβs telescope?
A refracting telescope
How did Galileo disprove the Geocentric model?
He saw Jupiter also had moons that orbit the planet
How does a refracting telescope work?
A refracting telescope uses a glass lense to focus the light waves into one point and then the light bounces to the eyepiece lens giving the user a magnified view
What does a refracting telescope do to the image and why is that not a problem for space?
The telescope flips the image but thereβs not really a right way up in space
What are the 3 types of satellites?
Geostationairy, Low Earth Orbit and Low Polar Orbit
How does a Geostationairy satellite work and how long do they take to orbit the Earth?
It stays above the same point and speed as the Earth and takes 24 hours to complete a full orbit
How does a Low Earth Orbit satellite work and how long does it take to orbit?
It goes to a certain height and can travel around the Earth in between 90 minutes and 2 hours
How does a Low Polar Orbit satellite work and how long does it take to orbit?
It orbits the poles and takes around 90 minutes to orbit
What are the main stages in the life cycle of a star smaller than or the same size as are the Sun?
The main stages are main sequence, red giant and white dwarf.
True or False: A starβs life cycle begins with a black hole.
False.
Fill in the blank: The process by which a star generates energy is called _____.
nuclear fusion.
What is the primary fuel for nuclear fusion in stars like our Sun?
Hydrogen.
What do we call a star that has exhausted its nuclear fuel and has expanded?
Red giant.
Which type of star ends its life cycle as a neutron star?
Stars bigger than the Sun
Multiple Choice: What is the final stage of a low-mass starβs life cycle? A) Supernova B) Black Hole C) White Dwarf D) Red Giant
C) White Dwarf.
What is the term for a collection of stars, gas, and dust bound together by gravity?
Galaxy.
True or False: Satellites can be natural or artificial.
True.
Multiple Choice: Which of the following missions was the first to land humans on the Moon? A) Apollo 11 B) Apollo 13 C) Gemini 4 D) Mercury-Redstone 3
A) Apollo 11.
What is the main goal of the Apollo program?
To land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth.
What is the term for the path a satellite follows around a celestial body?
Orbit.
