Physics WA1 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Topic: Kinetic Particle Model of Matter
What is the kinetic particle model of matter
Made up of tiny particles that are in constant motion
Topic: Kinetic Particle Model of Matter
What is an internal energy?
Energy from random motion + forces between particles
An energy store that is made up of the total kinetic energy from random motion of particles and total potential energy between particles
Topic: Kinetic Particle Model of Matter
Arrangement/Motion of Solids
Arrangement/Motion
| Motion
- Particles vibrate about their fixed positions and held by strong attractive forces between the particles
| Solids have highest density, fixed shape and volume
Arrangement
- Particles closely packed in an orderly manner
- Least amount of energy
Arrangement/Motion of Liquids
|Arrangement
- Particles are less closely packed in disorderly manner
|Motion
- Particles slide past each other freely without fixed postitions
- Forces holding the particles are weaker than in solids
Liquids have slightly lower densities than solids, fixed volume, no fixed shape
Arrangement/Motion of Gas
|Arrangement
- Far apart from one another in disorderly manner
- Particles have the most energy
|Motion
- Particles move freely and randomly in all direction
- Weak attractive forces between particles
Gases have lowest densities, no fixed volume and shape
Gases are compressable
What is the temperature reading?
Temperature rises with the average kinetic energy of the particles in a body
Changes of state
Boiling, Melting, Condensation, Solidification
|Melting/Boiling: energy transferred to substance
|Solidification/Condensation energy transferred out of substance
