Approximate PAO2 when an animal is breathing room air
100mmHg
Approximate PAO2 when an animal is breathing 100% oxygen under anaesthesia
500mmHg
Abbreviation of partial pressure of Oxygen at sea level
PAO2 = 5 x FiO2
What is measured with blood gases from an arterial blood sample?
The dissolved fraction of oxygen in the blood, the PaO2
How is oxygen carried within the blood?
Mostly bound to haemoglobin the rest dissolved in plasma
How anaemia impact blood oxygen content and delivery of oxygen to the tissues
There may not be many red blood cells circulating and although they are fully saturated with oxygen it is not enough to oxygenate the tissue
By assessing ETCO2 we can assess:
The circulatory systems ability to transport CO2 to the lungs, the ventilation and metabolism within the tissues
Normal ETCO2 in conscious animals
35-45mmHg
