Physiology of ageing Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the physiological changes associated w/ ageing?
Hearing loss
changes in body composition- more fat
Reduction in liver enzymes
What causes us to age?
Mutations building up in DNA
teleomere shortening due to absence of telomerase in somatic cells- cell division stops when telomere get too short
Damage to mitochondria
What factors contribute to physiological changes associated w/ ageing?
sleep
UV exposure
exercise
smoking
How do the changes as a result of ageing relate to disease burden in society
More time spent on reviewing meds
Potential of drug interactions or error due to polypharamcy= more hopistal admissions
Ageing population= more hospital admissions as older people present w/ more diseases= more beds, resources
