Nostalgia is bittersweet
childhood is seen a a time of safety and protection when they viewed the world with a childish wonder
but memories can create pain and a sense of loss for what can’t be reexperienced
memories can hold a strong sway over adult lives
Piano structure
The poem moves between past and present - hearing a woman singing in the present makes the speaker relive his past. However the present tense is used throughout to show the memories feel real to the speaker
turning point at the start of stanza 2 where nostalgia moves from pleasant to painful
frequent enjambment - long, winding sentences mimic the music
rhyming couplets throughout - simple rhyme scheme creates a sense of comfort and predictability
