Q

What pathogens causes problems during post-weaning period?

A
  • Post-weaning diarrhea due to sudden diet change and E. Coli
  • Even if you try to reduce morbidity and mortality -still some single piglets will get it.
  • Spreads rapidly even between pens
  • Yellow color of feces, dehydration, anorexia, pyrexia

Q

What diarrheal dz hits during first weeks of weaning?

Q

What kind of pathogen can cause hemorrhagic diarrhea with thick mucus?

A

Brachyspira hyodysenteriae

  • How do we know it’s it without laboratory? thick mucus in feces!
  • Not post-weaners anymore – growers and finishers even.
  • Can cause diarrhea starting in piglets at 7 weeks even. But if it’s already endemic situation, normally in older animals.

Also hemorrhagic
* Clostridium perfringens
* Campylobacter
* Lawsonia
* Salmonella

Q

With treatment, it depends on pathogen – sometimes we treat only diseased animals, sometimes the whole group.

For pathogens do we need to treat the whole group, not just the diseased:

A

o E. Coli
o Clostridium perfringens
o Dysentery
o If it’s lawsonia and the hemorrhagic form
* If not hemorrhagic treat just the diseased ones
