Pig seminar questions Flashcards
(10 cards)
Which pathogen can cause diarrhea very early on?
Clostridium perfringens type C can affect newborns
What kind of diarrhea does clostridium cause?
- Hemorrhagic, very acute
Morbidity and mortality of clostridial diarrhea?
Morbidity & mortality: 100%
Typical diarrhea for E. Coli
- Dehydration
- Not so watery, but quite watery
- Yellow-greenish – specific ammonial smell
Pasty diarrhea, lighter in colour – can even be foamy?
What dz?
Coccidia
What pathogens causes problems during post-weaning period?
- Post-weaning diarrhea due to sudden diet change and E. Coli
- Even if you try to reduce morbidity and mortality -still some single piglets will get it.
- Spreads rapidly even between pens
- Yellow color of feces, dehydration, anorexia, pyrexia
What diarrheal dz hits during first weeks of weaning?
- Lawsonia intracellularis aka proliferative enteropathy
- After weaning, what form of lawsonia can we see?2nd-3rd week
adenomatosis (NOT hemorrhagic)
How can we be sure that it’s lawsonia aka proliferative enteropathy during post mortem?
- Macroscopic lesions – intestinal mucosa looks like brain
What kind of pathogen can cause hemorrhagic diarrhea with thick mucus?
Brachyspira hyodysenteriae
- How do we know it’s it without laboratory? thick mucus in feces!
- Not post-weaners anymore – growers and finishers even.
- Can cause diarrhea starting in piglets at 7 weeks even. But if it’s already endemic situation, normally in older animals.
Also hemorrhagic
* Clostridium perfringens
* Campylobacter
* Lawsonia
* Salmonella
With treatment, it depends on pathogen – sometimes we treat only diseased animals, sometimes the whole group.
For pathogens do we need to treat the whole group, not just the diseased:
o E. Coli
o Clostridium perfringens
o Dysentery
o If it’s lawsonia and the hemorrhagic form
* If not hemorrhagic treat just the diseased ones
