24
Q

What is self acceptance?

A

Self acceptance is my refusal to be in an adversarial relationship to myself.

25
What is the first level of self acceptance?
To be self accepting is to be on my own side to be for myself. I choose to value myself, to treat myself with respect, to stand up from my right to exist. This primary act of self-affirmation is the base on which self-esteem develops.
26
What is the second level of self acceptance?
It entails our willingness to experience that is, to make a real to ourselves, without denial or evasion, that we think what we think, feel what we feel, desire, what we desire, have done what we have done, and are what we are. It is the refusal to regard any part of ourselves, such as our bodies, our emotions, our thoughts, our actions, our dreams, as alien or as not me.
27
What is the third level of self acceptance?
It entails the idea of compassion, of being a friend to myself. Suppose I have done something that I regret, or of which I am ashamed, and for which I reproach myself. This level of self acceptance inquires into the context in which the action was taken. It wants to understand the Y. It wants to know why something that is wrong or inappropriate felt desirable or appropriate or even necessary at the time.
