In that case, let’s go by taxi! (NOTE: it’s not ‘let’s take a taxi’, it’s ‘let’s go by taxi’)

I got an email from my colleague Eleni.

Έρχεται να με επισκεφτεί τη Δευτέρα.
Her husband is coming as well
(emphasis on the fact that he’s coming)
but the children aren’t coming.
Έρχεται και ο άντρας της
αλλά τα παιδιά δεν έρχονται.
Both of them are in America now.
(speaking of the children, i.e. neuter plural)
Και τα δύο είναι στην Αμερική τώρα.
They’re going to stay there for one year.
They’ve lived there one year.
Θα μείνουν εκεί ένα χρόνο.

I’m going to buy them a gift.
Θα τους αγοράσω ένα δώρο.
Let’s go at seven.
I have to work until seven and my wife wants to buy a few things. I think she wants to buy a gift for me.
Πάμε στις επτά.
Πρέπει να δουλέψω μέχρι τις επτά και η γυναίκα μου θέλει να αγοράσει μερικά πράγματα.
Νομίζω θέλει να αγοράσει ένα δώρο για μενα.

Πήρα ένα email από μια αμερικανίδα φίλη.
Remember: the verb Παίρνω can also mean to take.
She’s coming to visit me.
Έρχεται να με επισκεφτεί.
Her older son is coming as well.
Έρχεται και ο μεγάλος γιος της.
the grammatical gender of ‘γιος’ is masculine. Remember words designating male or female things can also be of the neuter gender. Because ‘γιος’ is the subject in the above sentence, the form of the definite article before it is ‘ο’.
Does he speak Greek?
Yes, and he likes Greece very much.
Μιλάει ελληνικά;
Ναι, και του αρέσει πολύ η Ελλάδα.
μιλάει v. μιλά - see footnote for explanation.
“Μιλά” is a simple, more casual form used in everyday speech. It’s common in informal settings and when you want to convey a general or habitual action.
“Μιλάει” is a slightly more formal form, often used in written language, formal speech, or when you want to emphasize the ongoing or continuous nature of the action.
They’re coming on Friday.

Έρχονται στις οχτώ και είκοσι.
She likes to travel.
Της αρέσει να ταξιδεύει.
Her husband prefers to stay at home.
Ο άντρας της προτιμάει να μείνει σπίτι.
προτιμάει is more formal than προτιμά.
προτιμάει means its habitual. προτιμά it applies in the present situation.
He doesn’t like to travel.
She likes to travel.
Δεν του αρέσει να ταξιδεύει.
Της αρέσει να ταξιδεύει.
Would you like that we go to the movies?
Yeah, sure, maybe Friday?

Unfortunately, my husband prefers to stay home. He doesn’t like to travel.
Δυστυχώς, ο άντρας μου προτιμάει να μένει σπίτι. Δεν του αρέσει να ταξιδεύει.

*remember that the same verb - να πάρει - also means to take. in previous lessons we used να πάρει in the context of ‘to take a taxi’.

Έρχεται να με επισκεφτεί την Παρασκευή.
Does he like the movies?
Yes, but he prefers to go to a good restaurant.
Then we can go to the movies and a good restaurant!
Του αρέσει το σινεμά;
Ναι, αλλά προτιμά να πάει σε ένα καλό εστιατόριο.
Τότε, μπορούμε να πάμε σινεμά και σε ένα καλό εστιατόριο!
remember, in spoken language pronounce ‘σε ένα’ as one word - ‘séna’.
