What are you going to do today?
A friend of mine is coming to visit me. And her husband is coming.
Τι θα κανεις σημερα?
Μια φίλη μου έρχεται να με επισκεφτεί.
Και ο άντρας της έρχεται.*
*you can also say: ‘‘Ερχεται και ο άντρας της.’
The variable ways of ordering words in Greek is mostly informed by what one is putting the emphasis on. Making the verb the first word of a sentence signals an intent to put an emphasis on what is being said.
Both are American but they’ve lived here for two years.
(in this scenario, the two persons referred to are either both male or one is male and the other female)
Και οι δύο είναι Αμερικανοί αλλά μένουν εδώ δύο χρόνια.
We’re going to eat lunch together.
Where, at your place?
Yes, first we’ll have lunch and then we’ll go into town.
Θα φάμε μεσημεριανό μαζί.
Που, σπίτι σου;
Ναι, πρώτα θα φάμε μεσημεριανό και μετά θα πάμε στο κέντρο.
Note that you can pronounce ‘κέντρο’ as ‘kéndro’ or as kéddro’. You should, by now, be familiar with the fact that the N sound is often dropped in a very large number of words. BUT THIS IS A MATTER OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE !!!!
My (female) friend wants to buy a gift.
Η φίλη μου θέλει να αγοράσει ένα δώρο.
She wants to buy a present for her daughter.
Θέλει να αγοράσει ένα δώρο για την κόρη της.
First she’s going to buy a gift and then we’ll go for a drink.
Πρώτα θα αγοράσει ένα δώρο και μετά θα πάμε για ένα ποτό.
Will you go by taxi?
Yes, of course.
Θα πάτε με ταξί;
Ναι βέβαιος.
I often go by taxi to go into town, (and) you?
From time to time.
Πάω συχνά με ταξί στο κέντρο, εσύ;
Πότε-πότε.
I’m going to go into town.
I want to buy a gift but today our son needs the car. He has to buy a few things.
I can go on foot.
Θα πάω στο κέντρο.
Θέλω να αγοράσω ένα δώρο αλλά σήμερα ο γιος μας χρειάζεται το αυτοκίνητο. Πρέπει να αγοράσει μερικά πράγματα.
Μπορώ να πάω με τα πόδια.
I go often into town on foot.
Πάω συχνά στο κέντρο με τα πόδια.
foot:πόδι
gender: neuter
I want to buy the gift today.
Θέλω να αγοράσω το δώρο σήμερα.
(δώρο is a neuter word)
Why don’t we go into town together?
Γιατί δεν πάμε στο κέντρο μαζί;
First we can buy the gift and then we can go for a drink.
Πρώτα μπορούμε να αγοράσουμε το δώρο και μετά μπορούμε να πάμε για ένα ποτό.
Until what time would you like that we stay in town?
I don’t know, maybe until six?
In that case, why don’t we go by taxi?
(Remember: to take a taxi and to go by taxi are not the same phrase…)
Μέχρι τι ώρα θα ήθελες να μείνουμε στο κέντρο;
Δεν ξέρω, ίσως μέχρι τις έξι;
Τότε γιατί δεν πάμε με ταξί;
We can take a taxi if you’d like.
Μπορούμε να πάρουμε ταξί αν θα ήθελες.
I got an email from a friend.
Πήρα ένα email από έναν φίλο.
the verb ‘παίρνω’, ‘to take’, can also mean ‘to receive’.
He’s coming to visit me.
His wife is coming as well.
(tip: put the emphasis on her coming)
Έρχεται να με επισκεφτεί.
Έρχεται και η γυναίκα του.
I’m going to buy them a gift.
Θα τους αγοράσω ένα δώρο.
Are they going to stay at your house?
No, at the hotel Astera.
Θα μείνουν σπίτι σου;
Όχι, στο ξενοδοχείο Αστέρα.
Both are coming at ten to five.
Και οι δύο έρχονται στις πέντε παρά δέκα.
I got the email this morning.
Πήρα το email σήμερα το πρωί.
We can go on foot.
Or, of course, we can take a taxi.
Μπορούμε να πάμε με τα πόδια.
Ή, βεβαίως, μπορούμε να πάρουμε ταξί.
