Pituitary Glands and the Hypothalamus Flashcards
Hypothalamus
at the base of the brain near the pituitary gland
Pituitary Gland
attached to bottom of the hypothalamus and has 2 major regions:
1. Anterior pituitary gland
2. Posterior pituitary gland
What is the hypothalamus in charge of?
-Temp
-BP
-Nutrient content
-Hormone content
-Water content
What happens when the hypothalamus receives nervous stimuli that something needs to be change in the body?
stimulates cell activity through the anterior and posterior pituitary gland
Posterior Pituitary gland
-Closest to hypothalamus
-Doesn’t produce any hormones
-hypothalamus sends oxytocin and ADH to PPG and it releases it
Anterior Pituitary gland
-Further from hypothalamus
-hypothalamus communicates through capillaries by sending stimulating and releasing hormones
-4 of the hormones APG produces stimulate the release of other hormones
Hormones Anterior Pituitary gland produces and releases:
-Growth Hormone (GH)
-Prolactin (PRL)
-Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) -> regulates thyroid
-Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) -> regulate cortisol
-Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) -> regulate mensuration and eggs
-Luteinizing hormone (LH) -> regulates gonads
