Pixl Test Flashcards
(24 cards)
Describe the forces between particles in a solid.
Strong forces of attraction.
Describe the arrangement of particles in a gas.
Almost no forces of attraction between particles.
Describe the arrangement of particles in a liquid.
Particles are free to move but tend to stick together.
State the process of a substance changing from a liquid to a solid.
Freezing.
Define Sublimation.
Solid changing straight to a Gas.
State what happens to the particles during evaporation.
When a liquid is heated, the particles get more energy and move faster.
State whetted happens to the forces between particles during freezing.
Particles move less, the forces between the particles becomes stronger and holds them in a fixed position.
State what happens to the particles during condensation.
When a Gas is cooled, the particles get less energy and slow down, this strengthens the force between them.
State what air is made up from.
Air is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, argon and water vapour.
Define chemical purity.
Made up of only one type of atom or only one compound.
State whether a substance that melts over a range if temperatures is a mixture or pure.
Mixture.
State whether a substance that melts with a sharp melting point is a mixture or pure.
Pure.
State whether a substance that melts with a sharp melting point is a mixture or pure.
Pure.
Describe how you would make predictions about the state of of a substance if you are given information about the melting point and boiling point., e.g predict the state of a substance at 1000°c if the 801°c and boiling point 1413°c.
The melting point is 801°c - this means it is a solid below 801°c. The boiling point is 1413°c, this means that it is a gas above 1413°c and a liquid in between. 100°c is in between 801°c and 1413°c, therefore it must be a liquid.
Name the process used to separate a liquid from a soluble solid.
Simple distillation.
During fractional distillation which liquid will evaporate first?
The liquid with the lowest boiling point.
How does the fractionating column stop liquids with a higher boiling point from being collected too soon?
The column is cooler at the top, so liquids with a higher boiling point will only get part of the way up before condensing and running back down towards the flask.
In paper chromatography what is the mobile phase?
The solvent.
Once a chromatogram has been produced what do you need to work out for each spot?
The Rf value.
What is potable water?
Water that is fit to drink.
Lost sources of water.
Surface water, ground water and waste water.
How can you get potable water from sea water?
By distilling it.
How do we not tend to use the distillation of seawater to obtain potable water in the UK?
Distillation requires a lot of energy so it is very expensive.
What is deionised water?
Deionised water is water that has had the ions (calcium, iron and copper ions) that are present in normal tap water removed.
