Planning and conducting research (experimental design) Flashcards
(7 cards)
Three types of experimental design
Repeated measures design
Independent measure design
Matched participants design
definition of Repeated measures design
This involves using the same people in each condition
definition of Independent measure design
This involves using different people in each condition
definition and how Matched participants design works
This info, for using different people in each condition
Make the participant as similar as possible on certain key characteristic
Done by testing the individual on the key characteristic powering down based on similar score, and then placing one member of each pair into each group
Advantage and disadvantage of repeated measures design
Remove the effects of any participant variables on cause and effect
Easier to obtain sympathy were participants are needed overall
Demand characteristic, participant me, identify what is this study is protecting and behave. Accordingly as they guess the aim
Order effect may influence results, unless counterbalance is used
(second time, you do the experiment you will do better through practice)
Advantage and disadvantage of independent measure design
They are aware of other conditions so lower, the demand characteristic
No order, in fact, they only take part in one condition
Higher level of effort to collect more participant
Finding maybe influence by participant variables as each individual is unique in some ways
Advantage and disadvantage of match participant de sign
Less effects of participant variables, no other factor, valid
No order is a different participant for each condition (only if repeated)
Less chance of demand characteristic (compare to repeated) participant, only do one condition
More effort to find participant , set up, pre test of characteristic , but no exact same
No control over all of the extraneous, variable by perfectly matching participant
If one per withdraw, imbalance the group/ find someone who match whoever dropped out (difficult)
