Plant adaptations to availability of water - hydrophytic adaptations Flashcards
(9 cards)
Why is there a thin or no waxy cuticle?
Water loss isnt an issue
What is the purpose of many stomata on upper surface?
Maximises gas exchange
Why are the stomata always open?
For gas exchange + transpiration
What is the purpose of wide, flat leaves?
To capture as much light as possible
Why is there reduced support within the leaves?
Water supports leaves instead so no strengthening support needed
What is the purpose of small roots?
Water can diffuse directly into the stem + leaf tissue so less need for root uptake
Why is there a large SA under water for roots + stems?
Maximises area for photosynthesis + for O2 to diffuse into submerged plants
What is the purpose of aerenchyma?
Forms low resistance internal pathway for substance movement to tissues under water
Why is there air sacs?
Enables leaves + flowers to float above water surface
