Plant and animal responses Flashcards
Define abiotic
Non-living components of the environment
Define biotic
Living components of the environment
What is tropism?
A growth of a part of a plant in response to a directional stimulus
What is the term for when tropisms are towards a stimulus?
Positive stimulus
What is the term for when tropisms are away from the stimulus?
Negative tropisms
What is phototropism in response to and what type of stimulus is it?
Light and abiotic
What is geotropism in response to and what type of stimulus is it?
Gravity and abiotic
What is hydrotropism in response to and what type of stimulus is it?
Moisture and abiotic
What is thigmotropism in response to and what type of stimulus is it?
Touch and abiotic or biotic
What is chemotropism in response to and what type of stimulus is it?
Chemicals and abiotic/biotic
Advantages of phototropism
- Ensures plant gets access to as much light as possible, maximising photosynthesis
Advantages of geotropsim
- Ensures shoots and roots from germinating seeds grow in the right direction, regardless of the orientation of the seed
What do shoots and roots show in geotropism?
Shoots show negative geotropism and roots show positive geotropism
Advantages of hydrotropism
- Root tips normally grow towards damper areas of soil, increasing their access to water
Advantages of thigmotropism
- Allows plants to detect abiotic or biotic support and curl around
