Plant and Animals: Intraspecific relationships Flashcards
(19 cards)
Intraspecific relationships
Relationship between members of the same species
Courtship
A set of display behaviours in which an animal attempts to attract a mate and exhibit their desire to mate/ reproduce.
Courtship signals
Vocal, visual, Chemical, Touch
Courtship disadvantages
TIme consuming
- energy loss
- Could’ve been looking for resources
Courtship advantages
- Males do it so that females don’t see them as potential, predators or prey
- Prevents interspecific matings, mating/ courtship signals are based on species
- Enable state of sexual readiness
- Attracts a mate
Parental Care
Investment of time and energy in the rasing of offspring
Group cooprative
Process where groups of an organism work or act together for common or mutual benefits
Pair bonding
A strong affinity that fevelops in some species between a mating pair… leads to producing and rasing of offspring and potentially a lifelong bond.
Territory
Area occupied and defened (highly protected and defened) by an animal
Lek
Territory established by males and used soley for mating
Agonisitc behaviours
Are those behaviours which cause or seek to reduce physical damage
Threats, submission, agression (fighting- winning a competition is based on the quality of a males gene and physical vigour and large size)
Social dominance
Social hierachy and linear hierarchy
Hierarchy
Is known to be the systematic organisation of organisms into levels
Reprudcitve strategies
R-strategies
Produce hugh number of tiny offspirng, unprotected offsrping, suffer high mortality
Reprudcitve strategies
k-strategies
Produces small number well cared fo offspring
Mating systems
Monogamy
Relationship between the series in which each male mates with only one female in given breeding seaosn
Mating systems
Polygamy
Relationship between the sexes in which each male mates with many females in a given season
advantage: Success (father larger number offsrping) - can ead to reduced geentic diversity, inbreeding genetic disorder
Mating systems
Polygynandry
Multiple males mate with multiple females
advantage: greater genetic diversity mates compete less with eachother- greater protection and care for the young
Mating systems
Polyandry
One female mates with several males in a breeding season
