Plant Cell Organisation Flashcards
What are plants made of
Organs
Stems
Roots
Leaves
What is the epidermal tissue
Covers the whole plant
What is the palisade mesophyll tissue
Part of leaf where most photosynthesis happens
What is the spongy mesophyll tissue
In the leaf
Contains air spaces to allow gases to diffused in a in out of cell
What does the phloem do
Transport food substances made in leaves to the rest of the plant
What does the xylem do
Transport water and mineral ions from roots to stem and leaves
Why is the epidermal tissue covered in waxy cuticle
To reduce water loss by evaporation
Why is the upper epidermal transparent
So light can pass through into palisade layer
What does the xylem and phloem form
Network of vascular bundles which deliver water and nutrients to plant and take away glucose produced from photosynthesis
What is the stomata
Holes in the lower epidermis which let carbon dioxide diffuse into leaf
What do the guard cells do
Open and close the stomata in response to environmental conditions
