Plant Classification Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is classification?
Identification and assigning organisms (plants) into taxonomic groups.
Plant taxonomy?
Science of describing, identifying and classifying and naming plants based on a set of rules.
Identification is?
The process of assigning an entity to a group that has already been established
What are the Characteristics of Plants?
Morphology (forms, structure)
Anatomy (bodily structure)
Physiology (functional parts)
Cytology (cellular)
Biochemistry (chemical processes within)
Geographic Distribution
What is Plant Systematics?
Involves the naming (nomenclature), gathering and assessment of plant classification data
Nomenclature is also known as?
Naming of organisms
The idea of two names in nomenclature was popularized by?
Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) aka. Carl Von Linnne
Who is the father of modern taxonomy?
Carolus Linnaeus (1707- 1778)
Alias. Carl Von Linne.
Was a Swedish botanist, zoologist, taxonomist and physician
Systematics is?
Placing of organisms in groups based on their similarities and differences
What is artificial classification?
Classification/ grouping based on few easily identifiable characteristics
What is natural classification?
Grouping with more evidence based on research into various aspects (such as genetics, biochemistry)
What is Phylogenetic classification?
Grouping based on evolutionary development and diversification of a specie
What is Phenetic Classification?
Grouping based on observable characteristics (morphological, cytological and biochemical) of of an organism. Used where no fossil records exist to establish evolutionary relationships
What are the two main types of classification?
Artificial
Natural
What are keys?
Clues used for specimen identification.
Observable characters of unknown organisms are first identified and listed before being matched with diagnostic characters of an existing group
What are the Phylums/ Divisions in the traditional classification of Kingdom Plantae?
• Schizomycophytae
• Thallophytae
• Bryophytae
• Pteridophytae
• Spermatophyta
Which plants are the first to survive on land?
Bryophytes
Between the gametophyte a d sporophyte structure in Rhizopus, which is more dominant? Why?
The gametophyte is the dominant and sporophyte part depends on it for reproduction.
They later become independent
Name the bryophtes
Liver worts- Hepaticae
Hornworts- Anthocerotae
Mosses- Musci
The most primitive of bryophytes
Liver worts
What are cryptograms
Pteridophytes
Male gamates in bryophytes
Antheridium
Kingdom Monera are the
Bacteria
What are the two groups in Monera?
Archaebacteria (Extremophiles)
Eubacteria (True bacteria)
