Plant Diseases Flashcards

1
Q

What is the impact of the
Tobacco mosaic virus on
plants? (Especially tobacco

Q

What are aphids?

A

Tiny insects found in large
numbers sucking the sap from
the stems of plants. They
reduce the rate at which the
plants grow, cause them to wilt
and make their leaves curl and
discolour.
Ladybirds are used to combat
aphids.

Q

Give physical plant defence
responses to resist invasion of
pathogens.

A

Tough waxy cuticle on leaves. Strong cellulose cell walls. Layers of dead cells around stem (bark) which can fall off taking the pathogen with it.

Q

Give chemical plant defence
responses to resist invasion of
pathogens.

A

Antibacterial chemicals
produced (e.g. mint, witch
hazel).
Poisons made to stop it being
eaten.
