Plant Growth Processes Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the primary purpose of photosynthesis?
To convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose.
Which pigment is primarily responsible for capturing light energy in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
Multiple Choice: What are the products of photosynthesis? A) Oxygen and glucose B) Carbon dioxide and water C) Glucose and nitrogen D) Oxygen and carbon dioxide
A) Oxygen and glucose
Describe the Photosynthesis process
Carbon dioxide and water + light = sugar and oxygen
Explain Respiration
A process that allows plants to turn the stored energy of carbohydrates made via photosynthesis into energy they can use to power growth and metabolic processes.
Shorter explanation of respiration
Sugar + oxygen oxidises to become carbon dioxide, water and energy (used for growth and repair)
Transpiration
Loss of water by land plants - occurs in stomates which are mostly found on leaves and sometimes in young stems, flowers, fruit and young roots. Can happen on lenticels in older plants.
