Q

Give three benefits that plant oils have for cooking.

A

1) They have a higher boiling point allowing food to cook at higher temperatures and at faster speeds. 2) You get more flavour as the oils have their own flavour and other flavours are soluble in the oil allowing it to be ‘carried’ 3) Using oil to cook food increases the energy we get from eating it

Q

What is biodiesel? What is it made from?

A

Vegetable oils (rapeseed oil and soybean oil) can be turned in to fuels. Biodiesel (one of the fuels) can be used in the same way as diesel as it is high in energy and burns in the same way and has similar properties.

Q

Describe the difference between saturated and unsaturated oils.

A
