Plant pathology Flashcards
(9 cards)
define plant pathology
the study of plant diseases
what are Koch’s postulates
an organism was the cause of an infectious disease if it can:
- be isolated from a diseased host
- be grown in the lab
- cause the same disease upon re-introduction into another host plant
- be re-isolated from that host
why does Koch’s test not always work
some fungal pathogens cannot be cultured, or in some cases it is not easy to carry out Koch’s test
what are the largest group of plant pathogens
fungi
how do fungi reproduce
asexually or sexually via spores
how do bacteria reproduce
by cell division, cells are dispersed via wind, rain, insects etc to host
what are some current methods of disease control
- fungicides
- cultural practices
- plant resistance
- biological control
what are some challenges of disease control
climate change causes a shift in pest/pathogen populations
sustainable land use - lack of effective disease control measurements
what is the ecological marketplace
challenges in transforming curiosity driven discoveries into industrial scale endophyte biotechnology
