Plant reproduction definitions Flashcards
(17 cards)
Reproduction
The life process that allows an organism to produce a new generation
Fertilization
The process in which a haploid Male and female gamete unite to form a diploid zygote.
Angiosperm
Flowering plants that produce ovules enclosed in an ovary
Pollination
the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to a stigma
Cross-pollination
The delivery of pollen from the stamen of one flower to the stigma of a flower on another plant of the same species
Self-pollination
The transfer of pollen from one flower to the stigma of the same flower or other flowers on the same plant. Plants adapted to self fertilize often have similar stamen and carpel lengths.
Seed
A small embryonic plant enclosed in a covering called the testa (seed coat) and is nourished by endosperm tissue
Cultivar
a plant selected for desired characteristics that can be maintained by propagation
Hybrid plant
A plant formed from the cross-pollination of plants with different characteristics to yield a new variety
Ovary and anther
Cutting
A vegetative plant part which is severed from the parent plant to regenerate itself, thereby forming a whole new plant
Division
A plant cluster is cut through with a sharp tool, and multiple sections of the cluster are separated by the division to grow into individual plants
Grafting
A technique used to join parts from two or more plants so that they appear to grow as a single plant.
Plant Tissue culture
The growth of small amounts of plant tissues or cells in an artificial medium separate from the organism
Cultivar
A plant selected for desired characteristics that can be maintained by propagation
Mutagenesis
the proces by which the genetic information of an organism is changed by exposing seeds to mutagens such as chemicals or radiation, to generate mutagenic plants/seeds with desired traits
Seed Bank
A facility used to store seeds in an effort to maintain biodiversityin
