PLANTS AND HOMEOSTASIS Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is the xylem?
continuous tube that carries water dissolves mineral ions upwards, TRANSPIRATION
what is the meristem?
where new cells are made
what is the phloem?
tubes of cells that carry sugars (e.g. sucrose) and other nutrients to where needed downwards, TRANSLOCATION
what can the rate of transpiration be increased by?
increase in temperature, decrease in humidity, increase in air movement
what are the layers of a leaf structure? (top to bottom)
waxy cuticle, upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongey mesophyll, vein/vascular bundle, lower epidermis
what is the stomata?
holes in lower epidermis to allow gases in and out, including water
what are the word and balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis?
WORD= water + carbon dioxide —> glucose + oxygen. EQUATION= 6H20 + 6CO2 —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
how is the rate of photosynthesis increased?
increasing temperature, increasing light intensity, increasing carbon dioxide concentration (limiting factors)
what is homeostasis?
the term given to an organisms ability to regulate internal conditions even when external conditions change
