plants for food or fiber Flashcards
(38 cards)
what does the stem do?
it supports the leaves and reproductive system and provides a passageway for water and nutrients to go to the leaves
what is an embryo
its the baby plant
what is the seed coat
its the tough outer layer that protects the embryo
what is endosperm
its stored food for the embryo
what does a leaf do?
it performs with gas exchange and photosynthesis
what does the root do?
it anchors the plant in the ground and absorbs the water and nutrients
what is transpiration
its the continuous process of water moving into the roots
what is xylem
it transports water and dissolved minerals one way to the roots up to the leaves
what is pholem
it transports food( sugar) up or down the plant to where it is needed ( two way movement)
what does the fruit do?
it protects the developing seeds
what does the flower do?
it attracts pollinators and contains the male and female reproductive structure.
name all the male parts and what they do
anther: produces pollen
filament: supports anther
name all the female parts and what they do
stgima: sticky bulb that catches pollen grains
style: passageway for pollen
ovary: holds eggs waiting for fertlization
ovule: small egg that grows into seed after fertlization
name the asexual parts and what they do
petal: attracts pollinators
speal: protects flower before it opens
pedicle: stem that supports single flower and transports food and water
stem: supports the leaves and reproductive system
photosynthesis equation :
carbon dioxide - water- light - chlorophyll - glucose + oxygen
cellular respiratrion equation
glucose + oxygen - energy release- carbon dioxide+ water + energy
what is osmosis
the diffusion of water
what is chlorophyll
a pigment in plants
what is photosyntheis
is when plants use sunlight to make there own food
what is cellular respiration
is when plants take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide to help humans and living organsism’s breath.
selective breeding
is when people or animals choose what plant or other animals they wanna breed
sexual reproduction
the production of seeds and fruits from specialized cells of 2 plants
asexual repoduction
the production of a parent plants that grow new plants from its roots ,stem, or leaves
what is gas exchange
happens at the leaves of a plant through the stomata
