Anatomical Position
Body standing, limbs extended, palms forward, thumbs directed outward.
Superior/Cranial
Structure is closer to the top of the head than another structure in the head, neck, or torso. Excludes limbs.
Anterior
Structure is more in front than another structure in the body.
Ventral
Abdominal side. Synonymous with anterior in bipeds.
Rostral
Beak-like structure projecting forward in front of the head or brain.
Posterior/Dorsal
Structure more in the back than another structure.
Medial
Structure is closer to the median plane than another structure.
Lateral
Structure that is farther away from the median plane than another structure in the body.
Proximal
Structure closer to the median plane or root of the limb than another structure in the limb.
Distal
Structure farther away from the median plane or root of the limb than another structure in the limb.
Inferior/Caudal
Structure closer to feet or lower part of body than another structure. Excluding limbs.
Superficial
External. Closer to surface of body.
Deep
Internal. Closer to interior of body.
Ipsilateral
On the same side as.
Contralateral
On the opposite side from.
Quadruped Points of Direction
Cranial - Head
Caudal - Tail
Ventral - Belly
Dorsal - Back
