Plate Boundaries Flashcards
(13 cards)
What causes plates to move?
Convection currents within the mantle
Two plates are moving away from each other
Divergent
Large areas where the crust has fractured and created depressions (caused by divergent boundaries)
Rift valley
Mountain ranges found on either side of the rift valley
Oceanic ridges
Two plates slide past each other
Transform boundary
A break or crack in the Earth’s crust
Fault
Two plates come together (collide)
Convergent boundary
Where one plate is forced down into the mantle beneath a second plate (from a convergent boundary)
Subduction zone
What marks the subduction zones on the surface
Trenches
What forms from the uplift of these continents
Mountains
What happens when a Oceanic and Continental crust come together in a convergent boundary
Continental crust movement is blocked by oceanic crust. Melting ocean crust rises to form volcanoes/mountains
What happens when a Oceanic and Oceanic crust come together in a convergent boundary
One of the two plates sinks under the other and Volcanic Islands grow out of the ocean from the melting sub-ducting plate
What happens when a Continental and Continental crust come together in a convergent boundary
Two plates collide and the continents being carried are forced upward
