plate boundaries Flashcards
what happens at divergent plate boundaries
plates move apart-magma rises through the gap in the earths crust and forms shield volcanoes- 2 oceanic plates
what is a destructive/convergent plate boundary
an oceanic and continental plate moving towards each other - when met the oceanic plate subducts under the continental plate- causes composite volcanoes , tsunamis and earthquakes
what happens at collision plate boundaries
2 continential plate boundaries move towards eachother - causes fold mountains e.g himilayas and mount everest
what happens at a conservative plate boundary
plates moving alongside each other at different speeds or in opposite directions- when the plates are stuck or dislodge this causes an earthquake
which is denser oceanic plates or continetal
oceanic
what is the hotspot theory
fixed spots in the mantle where magma rises to the surface. As the crust moves over these fixed spots, volcanoes are created, eventually forming a chain of volcanoes.
