6
Q

Explain paleomagneism

A

Magnetic field reverses at times
Magnetic strips running parallel to the mid-Atlantic ridge. These strips corresponded to times when the earths magnetic field reversed from North to South
Iron particles in erupting magma either side of the ridge cooled and aligned themselves with the earths polarity at the time

8
Q

Sea floor spreading

A

Lateral movement of new oceanic crust away from the mid- ocean ridge. As lava erupts it cools and turns into new crust whilst older rock is pushed away from the ridge

Q

Wilson cycle

A

Continents move apart to form ocean basins then other oceans must close. Therefore if land moves apart to create rifts then it must move together
