Plate Tectonic Theory Flashcards

1
Q

How does jigsaw fit support plate tectonic theory?

A

The west coastline of Africa looks like it could fit onto the east coastline of South America. Alfred Wegener had a theory where all the continents were once joined together and formed a super continent- Pangaea.

Q

How do convectional currents support plate tectonic theory?

A

Heat from the core rises up in the mantle as it is hotter. It creates a ridge push inbetween two tectonic plates and convection currents that rotate to move the plates and makes a slap pull at the end of them.

Q

How does the study of fossils support plate tectonic theory?

A

The Mesosaurus only lived in the eastern coast of South America and the western coast of Africa. This is seen from fossils. This suggests that they were once connected as the Mesosaurus wouldn’t be able to swim across the Atlantic Ocean.

Q

How does geological patterns support plate tectonic theory?

A

Coal has been found in Antarctica. Coal requires warm climates to form. This indicates the it was once near the equator

Q

What is the lithosphere?

A

The rigid outer part of the earth. It includes the crust and part of the upper mantle that contains rigid rocks.

Q

How does paleomagnetism support plate tectonic theory?

A

A discovery of the Mid Atlantic Ridge was made. These were formed by underwater volcanoes and lava rising up from a mid ocean ridge. As the lava cools the magnetic iron points to the north pole. Every 100 million years the Earth’s poles are switch from north to south. When this happens the iron particles in the erupting magma make a compass align with the Earth’s polarity at the time. This creates evidence of seafloor spreading.

Q

What is a mid ocean ridge?

A

A geological feature that is formed where two tectonic plates meet under the ocean. This creates mountains, volcanoes, and sometimes earthquakes.
