Mantle

A

The thickest and most massive layer. The planet’s mantle consist of MAGMA

Q

Core

A

the innermost layer which is divided into separate regions. mostly made of IRON and NICKEL
- inner outer core
- solid inner core

16
Q

Mechanical Layers

A
  1. Litosphere
  2. Asthenosphere
  3. Mesosphere
  4. Outer Core
  5. Inner Core
17
Q

Litosphere

A

the solid outer part of the earth, including brittle upper portion of mantle and crust

18
Q

Asthenosphere

A

the denser weaker layer beneath lithosperic mantle (not liquid). made of MAGMA

19
Q

Mesosphere

A

located beneath the asthenosphere. It encompasses the lower mantle, where material still flows but at a much slower
rate than the asthenosphere.

20
Q

Outer core (liquid)

A

extremely high temp that melt the metals

21
Q

Inner core (solid)

A

extremely high temp but it is in a solid form

22
Q

Why inner core isnt liquid?

A

due to extreme pressure.

23
Q

2 Types of Crust

A
  • Continental Crust
  • Oceanic Crust
24
Q

Continental crust

A
  • thick, less dense and old
  • 25 miles thick under the continents
  • composed of GRANITE
25
Oceanic crust
- thin, dense, sinks under and young - 3-5 miles thick under the oceans - composed of **BASALT**
26
Transition zones
Discontinuities
27
Conrad Discontinuity
- ***Victor Conrad*** - upper and lower crust
28
Moho/Mohorovicic discontinuity
- ***Andrija Mohorovicic*** - lower crust and upper mantle
29
Repetti discontinuity
- ***William C. Repetti*** - upper and lower mantle
30
Gutenburg discontinuity
- ***Beno Gutenburg*** - lower mantle and outer core
31
Lehmann discontinuity
- ***Inge Lehmann*** - outer and innner core
32
