Plate Tectonics Flashcards
(23 cards)
what are the differences between the inner core and the outer core?
inner- solid layer
outer- very hot liquid
describe the lithosphere
crust in the upper part of the mantle
describe the movement of heat transfer inside the earth
Heat from core starts a convection current that moves the plate tectonics and it’s a convection from heat from the core
what would happen to the flow of hot rock in the earths mantle if the planets core eventually cooled down?
how could this affect plate tectonics?
The flow, movement of plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes would stop
what is the theory of plate tectonics
pieces of the earths lithosphere are in constant slow motion driven by convection currents in the mantle
what is a mid ocean ridge and where can you find the oldest rock there?
mid ocean ridge- underwater mountain range formed by plate tectonics
furthest rock from ridge
what is subduction and what feature does it create
subduction- thin dense oceanic plate collided with light thick continental plate, oceanic plate is forced under continental plate
feature- volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes
what is a hot spot
intensely hot area in the mantle
below the earths crust that are stationary
what is a Rift Valley and where can we find one today
Rift Valley- a deep valley that forms when two plates pull apart
find one- Great Rift Valley in Africa
what are the three types of plate boundaries and how do the
plates move
divergent- two plates move apart
convergent- two continents come together or converge
transform- two plates slip past each other and move in opposite directions
what are the three types of convergent plate boundaries
- oceanic- oceanic
- continental- continental
- oceanic- continental
what features do these three types of plate boundaries create
divergent- igneous rocks form
transform- earthquakes
convergent- volcanoes
what is the super continent called that broke up 65 million years
ago
Pangaea
three pieces of evidence to support Pangaea
- shapes of continents fit together like a puzzle
- identical rocks have been found on different continents
- fossils of the same kinds of dinosaurs have been found
have the continents been together before and how many times
yes and 3
where is the longest mountain chain in the world and how is it formed
South America (Andes) and subduction
Himalaya Mountains
Nepal and convergent
San Andreas Fault
California and transform
mid Atlantic ridge
Atlantic Ocean and divergent
Mariana Trench
Hawaii and convergent
East African Rift Valley
Africa and divergent
Andes mountains
South America and convergent
Name the layers of the earth from outermost to innermost
crust, mantle, core
