A

General rule: Enclose the quotation in double quotation marks (“”).

Exception: Block quote when the material would commonly be set-off such as dialogues or poems.

Special rule: single quotation marks (‘’) for quoted portions within a quotation.

What are the rules for block quotes?

A

Rules on block quotes:

Use when it is at least 50 words (xpn: when the quote is a dialogue or poem, etc.);
Indent on the lft and right;
Single spaced;
Without double quotation marks (xpn: when the quote itself contains qtn mrks)
Footnote citation should follow immediately after the final punctuation of the quotation
Font size is one-unit less than that for the body text

What is the rule on multiple paragraphs in block-quotes?

A

Indicate the paragraph structure by indentinng the first line of each paragraph.

It is not necessary to indent the first line of a quoted paragraph if it is not the first line of the paragraph being quoted.
