Exposition
Introduce characters and describe the setting
Rising action
Complications/obstacles
Conflict
Problem that drives the plot, 5 types of conflicts person vs. person,person vs. society,person vs. nature,person vs. self,person vs. technology
Climax
The high point of interest/suspense
Falling action
Comes after climax
Resolution
Conflict is resolved
Chronological order
Tells events in the order in which they occurred
Flashback
Interrupts what’s happening and looks at the past
Forshadowing
Clues about what’s going to happen
Idiom
Expression that can’t be understood from the meanings of its separate words but must be learned as a whole
Metaphor
Figure of speech in which one thing is spoken or written of as if it were another
Simile
A figure of such that uses like or as to make a comparison
Analogy
Comparison of two things that are alike in come ways but otherwise quite different
