(36 cards)
Corticosteroids
this group of drugs reduces inflammation by suppressing almost all inflammatory products in the immune response.
ABX for lung infections
pen PK
amoxicillin
macrolides like clarithromycin and azithromycin
ciprofloxacin (Cipro) in a fluoroquinolone
antitussives
suppress coughing
dextromethorphan are the best antitussive agents
expectorants
thin mucous and aid in expectoration
guaifenesin - derived from the guaiac tree, is most popular expectorant in drugs like “Robitussin”
Nicotine in cigarette
delivered via gum, patches, or sprays
NicoDerm patches and Nicorette chewing gum
antidepressant Rx drug

astringents
in “Toners” shrink or constrict by coagulating skin proteins
antiinflammatory
agents can be natural products to powerful conrticosteroids drugs - from treating sunburn to eczema
keratolytics and caustic agents
keratolytics increase the turnover rate of the new skin cells, causing old skin to shed. Caustic dissolved the horny layer and deeper.
Emollients and moisturizers
they are formulated as eye, wrinkle, and anti-aging creams, lotions and gels
Toners
contain chemical compounds called “astringents”, that shrink or constrict the skin and cause mild coagulation of skin proteins.
Witch hazel, rubbing alcohol and vinegar
Keratolytics
sometimes called “anti seborrheics” increased skin turnover is the exfoliation of inflamed sebaceous glands (in acne)
Caustic agents
are outright toxic to any organic tissue their effects on the skin are somewhat like keratolytics but on a much more severe level
Eczema
means inflammation or “dermatitis”
some of the most common causes of eczema (dermatitis) are:
1. Irritant dermatitis - sunburn
2. Atopy - implies an underlying allergic phenomenon (eczema, hay fever and asthma form the atopic triad
3. Infections - from various fungi, bacteria, and viruses
treating of dermatitis -Inflammation and Itching
- hydrocortisone 1% (cortaid)
- Triamcinolong (Kenalog) cream - Rx strenght steroids
- Prednisone - Rx
- diphenhydramine (Benadryl) - topical and oral
Sunscreen
water resistant or sweat resistant
cannot called “sunblocks” or “waterproof” or sweatproof” under new regulation
Sunburn
The SPF rating is a measure of the time it would take you to sunburn if you were not wearing sunscreen as opposed to the time it would take with sunscreen on.
Broad specturm SPF
SPF 15 = blocks 94% of UVB rays - all you need
SPF 30 = blocks 97% UVB rays
SPF 45 = blocks 98% UVB rays
Ultraviolet Spectrum
UVA = Light causes "aging" UVB = Light causes "burning"
Micronized titanium dioxide and zince oxide
the ugly paste - reflect/ block rays
Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
is on of the most popular sunscreen - absorb rays
