Why was the regeneration needed and what were the main aims ?

A

Deindustrialisation was occurring and the dockyards were shrinking quickly.
- Increase employment opportunities.
- Increase access to waterfront
- Develop recreational and cultural facilities for locals and tourists.
- To protect and enhance the environment.

What was done at devonport (2001-2011) ?

A
  • New Deals for Communities benefitted them which provided 10 years of funding to help deprivation.
  • Naval wall removed, inter-war houses knocked down and flats.
    Attracted new people to the area due to social housing.

What was done at the waterfront areas ?

A
  • £110 million spent on improving 3 Plymouth sites where private investors were willing to invest.
  • Urban Splash helped redevelop historical buildings and built apartments, restaurants office spaces and art galleries.
  • The waterfront has now generated £500 million inward investment from the private sector.

  • In 1991 Plymouth City Council created a comprehensive regeneration scheme.
  • 24ha brownfield site on eastern side of harbour redeveloped.
  • 2014 plans made to transform harbour into national destination.
