PMLS FINALS Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is capillary puncture?
A method that uses a lancet to make a small incision into the capillary bed of the skin.
What equipment is used for capillary puncture?
Lancet/Incision devices, laser lancet, microcollection container, microhematocrit tubes and sealants, microscope slides, warming devices, capillary blood gas (CBG) equipment.
What is the preferred specimen for infants and young children?
Capillary blood.
What are the indications for performing capillary puncture?
Veins are fragile, reserved for other procedures, clotting tendencies, extreme fear of needles, or used for glucose monitoring.
What should capillary puncture not be used for?
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate methods, blood cultures, and studies needing plasma specimens or large volume specimens.
What is the order of draw for capillary blood specimens?
Capillary blood gas specimens → slides and smears → EDTA → other additives → serum → newborn spot card.
What is a blood film/smear preparation?
A blood test used to check abnormalities in blood cells by spreading a small drop of blood on a slide.
What is required for neonatal bilirubin collection?
Amber-frosted tube, 5mL, T192, 2 serum gel microtainers.
What is the routine handling for blood specimens?
Mixing tubes by inversion and transporting specimens carefully.
What is the delivery time limit for routine blood specimens?
45 minutes.
What is the purpose of centrifugation?
To separate cells, plasma, or serum of blood specimens.
What are the common urine tests?
Routine urinalysis, urine culture and sensitivity, urine cytology studies, urine drug testing, urine glucose and ketone testing, urine pregnancy testing.
What is a midstream clean catch urine specimen?
A urine sample collected after cleaning the genital area to avoid contamination.
What is the blood donation process?
Includes donor screening, registration, medical history, physical examination, and guidance on venipuncture.
What equipment is required for blood donation?
Blood pressure monitors, scales, donor couches, chairs, beds, blood collection mixers, blood bag sealers, blood transportation boxes, blood bank refrigerators.
