Writing deposit slips and checks
Financial semantic field- fathers relationship with money was responsible- he was very responsible with money to be able to provide for his family and give them a secure future
He taught me
Repetition- she sees her father as a role model and he admires hi and has respect for his guidance
He cooked like a person dancing
Simile- calm and graceful as well as elegant as he cooks
Suggest his skill as a cook- his deliberate movement like a dancer
Bits of paper as a way to ‘escape’ the life he knew
Verb, speaker perceives her father to be trapped in that life, the bits of paper could refer to walkers/poets writing as an escape from the life of her childhood and financial struggles
Seasoning none of my life
Metaphor – she lives a spontaneous varied life – stimulating life – contrast to her father having to work all the time for being constantly tired tired
Cooking writing chopping wood staring into the fire
Listing – suggestions bold and not afraid to take risks she is facing life boldly- staring into the fire could symbolise looking into and reflecting upon the past
