  • use of elipses at the end of the 3rd stanza. Wasn’t common in victoriana times and shows he feels like there relationship is unfinished

Eden Rock

  • nature is used as a border between him and his parents like the sun making him less visible to his parents and the stream separating them.
  • ‘Eden rock’ Eden can mean garden of Eden or paradise, showing this is a dream. To futher show its a dream the narrator uses idealised images like the stiff white cloth and sprinted dress.
  • the narrator uses half rhyme to show he is hestitant to go forward, but also that he isn’t complete without his parents
  • monostich at end of poem shows contrast between the steady 4 lines stanzas during the dream, showing the narrator felt more safe and comfortable in his dream that in reality
  • poet uses specific adjectives to make the dream more vivid and real eg sprinted, stiff white, painted blue

Winter swans

  • enjambment to show the relationship keeps going even through difficult times
  • the swans symbolise undying love
  • description of nature recovering after rain is a metaphor for the people recovering from there argument
  • all stanzas are in trios until the last stanza which is a couplet, representing that they are now a pair again
  • lots of references to pairs eg two days, halved themselves, a pair of wings emphasising the 2 people belong together
  • the dark lake represents the difficulties they are trying to skirt around
