Simile
Comparison using like or as
E.g he is as hungry as a hippo
E.g2 she is like a cheetah on the track
Metaphor ( not to be confused with simile )
E.g he’s a mountain
E.g they are pigs

Repetition
A word or phrase being repeated multiple times in a poem
E.g “out and about the lads “ in “out and about the lads “
Hyperbole
Exaggeration ( think hyper )
E.g I am so hungry I could eat a horse
Onomatopoeia
Natural noises as words
E.g boom crash bang
Personification
( think person ) talking about an object or concept as though it were a living thing
E.g “lampposts and pillar boxes step aside “ - out and about the lads
E.g2 the waves danced in the moonlight
Alliteration
Repeating of a certain letter at the start of words
E.g battle of the bacon at the bakery
E.g2 I tried to trick the team at the training session
Assonance
Repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds
E.g the day lay in waiting for the may hay ( A sound )
Sibilance
When an s or sh sound is repeated multiple times ( usually at the the start of words )
E.g she sells seashells by the sea shore
Enjambement
When a word , sentence or phrase continues from one line of poetry to the next
Mood
The feeling or atmosphere of the poem
Theme
The main message or idea conveyed in a poem e.g family / love
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem
