Enjambment
When the meaning of one line runs into the next line or stanza. No pause at the end of the line.
Caesura
A break/pause in the middle of a line
Concrete language
Describing things that can be experienced through the senses
Allegory
Something that looks innocent but has a deep underlying meaning
Metonymy
When a word that merely relates to the object describes the object itself
Ie. the White House said that (instead of the president)
Synecdoche
Uses part of an object to describe the whole
Ie. all hands on deck, fifty head (of cattle)
Synesthesia
Using words to engage the senses… Using words that make you think of a smell, taste, colour, etc.
Euphemism
A mild word substituted for one that’s considered to be too harsh
Ie. passes away instead of died
Situational irony
In discrepancy between what exists and what should exist
Ie. landlord is evicted from his home
Verbal irony
In congruency between what is said and what is meant
Ie. saying “well done” angrily to someone who messed up
Dramatic irony
Where the reader shares knowledge of present or future circumstances with the author to which the character is ignorant
Pastoral poem
Individual poems that idealize rural life and landscapes
Internal rhyme
When a word in the middle of the line rhymes with a word at the end of the line
End rhyme
When the rhyme occurs at the end of a line
True rhyme
Initial consonants change but succeeding vowels/consonants remain the same
Ex. Span, van
Ear rhyme
Words that are spelled differently but sound the same
Ex. Here, beer
Half rhyme
Words that come near to rhyming, but don’t because the vowels of the rhyming words are different
Ex. Burned, earned
Eye rhyme
When words are spelled similarity but don’t rhyme
Ie. love, move
Identical rhyme
The use of the same words as a “rhymed” pair, usually for emphasis
Poem
Expresses ideas and relationships. Distinguished by descriptive images & its rhythm and rhyme.
Accent
A word or syllable that is stressed
Accentual-syllabic
It has a certain # of both accents (stressed) and syllables (unstressed) words or syllables
Meter
The beat of the poem
Foot
The counting of accents and syllables
