Context of the manhunt
This poem was part of a series to raise awareness of PTSD and how this disorder impacts many soldiers and other individuals who have served in military conflict zones. Speaker represents Laura, wife of Eddie beddoe who was a peacemaker in the 1990s Croat-Bosniak conflict and he was shot three times causing severe injuries to his face and body.
The manhunt first quote and technique
âOnly then would he let me trace the frozen river which ran through his faceâ. Repetition of âonly thenâ shows the time it takes to restore. Enjambment throughout to show the slow process of healing through the trauma. Metaphor âfrozen riverâ describes his scar and emotional coldness.
The manhunt second quote and technique
âThe blown hinge of his lower jawâ metaphor implies physical damage and difficulty in speaking and expressing emotions - can throw in some context here. The fragmented structure of poem reflects broken nature of the communication
The manhunt third quote and technique
âThe foetus of metal beneath his chestâ. Metaphor shows soldiers vulnerability and something unnatural is growing inside him because of combat
The manhunt fourth quote and technique
âThen I widened the searchâ. Use of first person pronoun and implying to title shows that it also affects the wife a lot and how war impacts a lot more people than just the people who combat and relation to title reflects a man who is lost and some who people are looking for reflecting the distance in the relationship because of combat.

Second sonnet 43 quote
âI love thee to the depth and breadth and heightâ
Metaphor presents the ceaseless nature of the speakers devotion and the intensity of the love. Repetition of âI love theeâ furthers this.
Third sonnet 43 quote and form/structure
âIf god choose, I shall but love thee better after death.â

She concludes with a declaration that the speakers love will not only endure but grow after death and shows love is a higher power. The traditional pattern of a pertrarchan sonnet with iambic pentameter adds to the poemâs romantic nature
