Sibilance
It is the repetition of hissing sounds, like “s,” “sh,” “z,” “x,” “c” or “ch” in close succession
E.g. “She sells sea shells by the sea shore.”
Plosive
It is a constant sound that is produced by making a ‘pop’ sound, like p, t, k, b, d, g.
E.g. Big black bombs bursting.”
Diction
This refers to the choice of words in writing, words that affect mood, tone and style.
Cacophony
It is a mix of harsh, jarring sounds that are loud, chaotic and unpleasant to hear.
E.g. The drums clanged, the clash and clatter cracked,
Boots thumped, teeth gnashed, and iron smacked.
Heroic couplet
It a pair of rhyming lines in an iambic pentameter(its a line of five pairs of syllables that are unstressed and stressed)
Refrain
It is a group of lines that repeat at regular intervals, often at the end of a stanza
Couplet
it is a pair of lines that usually rhyme, are of similar length and meter, often express a complete thought together.
Asyndeton
it is where conjunction, (like, but or and) are deliberately left out between words, phrases or clauses.
E.g. I came, I saw, I conquered.
Double entendre
It is a word or phrase that has two meanings, usually humorous or ironic.
Anthropomorphism
This is when human traits, emotions or behaviours are given to non-human things.
E.g. In literature: In George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, animals speak, think, and organise like humans.
Zoomorphism
This is when non-animal beings are given animal characteristics or qualities.
E.g. Describing a person as having “lion-like courage” or “eagle-eyed precision”
Synesthesia
This is when one sense is described using terms from another sense.
E.g. “A loud color” – mixing sound (loud) with sight (color)
